half listening
One ear only
Half listening describes paying only partial attention to what someone is saying—enough to catch fragments but not fully engaged.
The mind wanders elsewhere while maintaining the appearance of attention: I was half listening while scrolling through my phone.
Often implies the listener might miss important details or need things repeated.
