group rights
Community legal protections
Group rights are legal protections or entitlements held collectively by a defined group rather than by individuals.
These typically protect ethnic, religious, linguistic, or indigenous communities: The treaty recognized the group rights of First Nations peoples.
Group rights may include land claims, cultural preservation, self-governance, or protection from discrimination—rights that belong to the group as a whole and may not be reducible to individual members' claims.
