groundwater depletion
Underground water loss
Groundwater depletion is the long-term decline of water stored in underground aquifers, typically caused by pumping water out faster than natural processes can replenish it.
The condition threatens agriculture, drinking water supplies, and ecosystems that depend on springs and baseflows: Groundwater depletion in the Central Valley has caused the land to sink.
Wells must be drilled progressively deeper as water tables drop.
