Beyond merely bad
God-awful means extremely bad, unpleasant, or of terrible quality.
The term intensifies awful with a quasi-blasphemous invocation: What a god-awful mess, The food was god-awful, We had to sit through a god-awful presentation.
Sometimes hyphenated, sometimes not.
The expression is emphatic but only mildly offensive.
