gleaming scales
Shiny reptile armor
Gleaming scales are the shiny, reflective plates covering fish, reptiles, or dragons, catching light in a way that suggests health, beauty, or menace.
The phrase appears frequently in fantasy literature and nature writing: The serpent's gleaming scales caught the torchlight.
It can describe anything from a trout fresh from the water to a dragon guarding treasure.
