gentleman and scholar

Refined educated person

A gentleman and scholar is a compliment for someone who has done you a favor or shown good character.

The phrase combines two traditional markers of male virtue—refined manners and intellectual cultivation—but today it's usually playful or ironic: Thanks for covering my shift, you're a gentleman and a scholar.

The full form "gentleman and a scholar" is equally common.
