gather pace

Gain increasing momentum

To gather pace is to accelerate or gain momentum.

The phrase appears most often with processes, movements, or developments rather than physical objects: The reform movement gathered pace after the election.

A project gathers pace as it moves toward completion; a trend gathers pace as it spreads.

More common in British than American English, where "pick up speed" or "gain momentum" are preferred.
