free substitutions
Unrestricted player exchanges
Free substitutions is a sports rule allowing unlimited player changes during a game without restriction.
In American football and basketball, teams can swap players freely between plays.
Sports without free substitutions—like soccer—limit when and how many players can enter: Before free substitutions, coaches had to be strategic about when to rest their starters.
