fractional currency
Coins, not bills
Fractional currency is money worth less than the standard unit—in the U.S., coins or notes worth less than a dollar.
The term often refers specifically to paper money issued during the Civil War when coins were hoarded: The museum displayed fractional currency from the 1860s.
More broadly, it describes any subdivision of a currency's base unit.
