first mile
Journey's opening segment
First mile refers to the initial segment of a network or delivery chain—the connection between a service provider and the end user.
In telecommunications, it's the link from the central infrastructure to homes or businesses: The first mile is often the bottleneck for rural internet access.
In logistics, it describes the journey from origin to the first distribution point.
The term mirrors "last mile," which covers the final leg to the customer.
