fan game
Homage through play
A fan game is a video game created by enthusiasts based on an existing franchise, made without official authorization from the intellectual property holder.
Fan games are labors of love, typically free and nonprofit, recreating or reimagining beloved titles: Someone made a fan game that continues the story where the original ended.
They exist in legal gray areas—tolerated by some companies, shut down by others.
