fake experts
Fraudulent knowledge claimers
Fake experts are people presented as authorities on a subject despite lacking genuine expertise, credentials, or relevant experience.
The term often appears in discussions of misinformation, where fake experts lend false credibility to dubious claims: The tobacco industry relied on fake experts to cast doubt on cancer research.
A fake expert may have real credentials in an unrelated field, or none at all—what matters is the mismatch between their claimed authority and actual knowledge.
