subject matter experts
Domain knowledge holders
Subject matter experts are people with deep specialized knowledge in a particular field, consulted for their expertise.
The term appears most often in corporate, military, and technical contexts, frequently abbreviated SME: We brought in subject matter experts to review the proposal.
The phrase often signals institutional jargon—outside such settings, people just say experts.
