f sound

Voiceless fricative consonant

The f sound is made by pushing air through the narrow gap between the upper teeth and lower lip, producing a soft friction.

It's one of the first sounds children learn to identify when studying phonics: F makes the "fffff" sound, like in fish.

The same sound appears in words spelled with ph (phone, photo) or gh (enough, laugh).
