Essential personnel are workers whose presence is required for critical operations to continue.
The term appears most often during emergencies—natural disasters, pandemics, government shutdowns—when nonessential workers stay home while essential personnel report: Hospital staff, utility workers, and first responders were designated essential personnel during the storm.
