engine efficiency

Power output ratio

Engine efficiency is how much of a fuel's energy an engine converts into useful work.

Internal combustion engines typically waste most energy as heat; even efficient designs convert only 30-40% of fuel energy into motion.

The term appears in discussions of fuel economy, environmental impact, and engine design: Diesel engines have higher engine efficiency than gasoline engines.
