emmet

Ant, in dialect

Emmet is a dialect word for ant, surviving mainly in Cornwall and parts of southwestern England.

The term has taken on a second life as Cornish slang for tourists—outsiders who swarm in summer like ants, clogging roads and beaches: The emmets are back for August.
