drop the topic

Abandon the subject

To drop the topic is to stop discussing something, usually because the conversation has become uncomfortable, unproductive, or unwelcome: Can we just drop the topic?

Often used as a request or command when someone wants to end an awkward exchange: I said I don't want to talk about it—drop the topic.

The shorter drop it is more common.
