doubled back
Retraced one's steps
Doubled back describes reversing direction and returning along the same path you just traveled.
Someone might double back because they forgot something, realized they missed a turn, or—in more dramatic contexts—to throw off pursuers or check if they're being followed.
We doubled back when we realized we'd passed the trailhead.
The phrase can also apply figuratively to revisiting earlier points in a narrative or argument.
