domestic cats
Kept feline companions
Domestic cats are small carnivorous mammals kept as pets or for pest control, descended from wild ancestors but bred over millennia to live alongside humans.
The phrase distinguishes household cats from wild species like lions or leopards: Domestic cats sleep up to sixteen hours a day.
Often shortened to simply cats when context is clear.
