ding-dong ditched

Rang and bolted

Ding-dong ditched is the past tense of ding-dong ditch, a prank where someone rings a doorbell and runs away before the occupant answers.

The name mimics the doorbell sound followed by the hasty departure: We ding-dong ditched the grumpy neighbor and hid behind the bushes.

Also called doorbell ditching or, in British English, knock down ginger.
