demonstration sport
Unofficial Olympic showcase
A demonstration sport is an event included in a major athletic competition—typically the Olympics—to showcase it to audiences without awarding official medals or counting toward national standings.
The designation serves as a trial run: if the sport generates sufficient interest, it may become a full medal event in future games.
Baseball was a demonstration sport before gaining full Olympic status.
