cut and fill

Excavate then deposit

Cut and fill is an earthmoving technique where soil excavated from one area (the cut) is used to raise the level of another area (the fill).

The method is fundamental to road construction, railroad building, and site grading, allowing relatively level paths through hilly terrain: The highway required extensive cut and fill through the mountains.

The goal is usually to balance volumes so material removed equals material needed, minimizing hauling costs.
