cultural markers

Shared symbolic indicators

Cultural markers are features that signal membership in or familiarity with a particular group, era, or social context.

These can be behaviors, speech patterns, clothing choices, references, or preferences that identify someone as belonging to a community: Her use of "y'all" was a cultural marker of her Southern upbringing.

Shared cultural markers create in-group recognition and can exclude outsiders who don't catch the references.
