cul de sacs

Roads without outlets

Cul de sacs is a plural of cul-de-sac, a dead-end street, typically in a residential neighborhood, where the road terminates in a circular turnaround.

The French phrase means "bottom of the bag." Figuratively, a cul-de-sac is any situation with no way forward: The negotiations reached a cul-de-sac.

The plural culs-de-sac is also standard.
