criminal offence

Prosecutable unlawful deed

A criminal offence is an act that violates criminal law and is punishable by the state—through fines, imprisonment, or other penalties.

Distinguished from civil wrongs, which are disputes between private parties, criminal offences are prosecuted by the government on behalf of society.

The spelling "offence" is British; Americans write "offense." Assault is a criminal offence in all jurisdictions.
