cost-of-living index
Price level tracker
A cost-of-living index measures how prices for goods and services change over time or vary between places.
It tracks what a typical household spends on housing, food, transportation, and other necessities.
The most common is the Consumer Price Index (CPI), used to adjust wages, benefits, and tax brackets for inflation: Social Security payments are tied to the cost-of-living index.
