client privilege
Lawyer's sworn secrecy
Client privilege is the legal protection that keeps communications between a client and their professional advisor confidential.
Most commonly invoked as attorney-client privilege, it prevents lawyers from being compelled to reveal what clients told them: She claimed client privilege and refused to answer.
Similar protections extend to doctors, therapists, and clergy.
The privilege belongs to the client, not the professional, meaning only the client can waive it.
