chattering classes

Media commentator set

The chattering classes are educated, articulate people—journalists, academics, commentators—who discuss politics and culture, often dismissively implying they talk without acting or are out of touch with ordinary concerns.

The term is mildly derogatory, usually deployed by those who consider themselves more practical or closer to real life: The chattering classes obsess over issues most people don't care about.
