camel crickets

Camel crickets are large, humpbacked insects found in dark, damp places—basements, caves, crawl spaces.

Named for their arched backs, they have long antennae and powerful hind legs for jumping.

Unlike true crickets, they don't chirp.

Also called cave crickets or spider crickets, they startle people who encounter them indoors but are harmless.
