butter plates

Butter plates are small plates, typically four to six inches in diameter, placed at each setting for individual servings of butter.

In formal table settings, they sit to the upper left of the dinner plate: The caterer set out butter plates with small knives.

Also called bread plates or bread and butter plates, since they hold both.
