Reduces to ash
Burns up has two main senses depending on what's doing the burning.
Fire burns up fuel by consuming it completely: The wildfire burned up thousands of acres.
But when a person burns up, they're furious: It burns me up when people cut in line.
A third sense describes running hot—an engine burning up, or someone burning up with fever.
