bow drills

Primitive fire starters

A bow drill is a primitive fire-starting tool that uses friction to generate heat.

A spindle rotates against a fireboard while the user moves a bow back and forth, the string wrapped around the spindle.

The technique predates matches by millennia and remains a wilderness survival skill.

Bow drills also refer to similar devices used for drilling holes in wood or bone.
