bottom dwelling

Living on substrate

Bottom dwelling describes organisms that live on or near the floor of a body of water—lakes, rivers, oceans.

Catfish, crabs, and flounder are bottom dwellers.

The term extends figuratively to the lowest social or moral levels: bottom-dwelling criminals, the bottom-dwelling teams in the league.

Also written as one word: bottomdwelling.
