blueberry barrens
Wild harvest grounds
Blueberry barrens are low, flat expanses of land where wild blueberries grow densely, found primarily in Maine and eastern Canada.
The terrain appears barren because the landscape lacks trees—just miles of low shrubs that turn brilliant red in autumn.
We drove through the blueberry barrens of Downeast Maine.
The plants are managed by periodic burning rather than cultivation.
