blame Canada

Fault our neighbor

Blame Canada is a catchphrase used to mock the tendency to scapegoat external causes—especially foreign ones—for domestic problems.

Originating from the 1999 film *South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut*, where cartoon parents blame Canadian entertainers for corrupting their children, the phrase now applies sarcastically to any deflection of responsibility: Economy tanking? Blame Canada.
