battle buddies
Soldiers paired together
Battle buddies are paired soldiers assigned to look out for each other during training or combat—checking gear, providing backup, monitoring mental state.
The military formalized the practice to prevent isolation and improve unit cohesion.
The term extends to any two people who stick together through difficult situations: We were battle buddies through med school.
