back lanes

Behind-building narrow roads

Back lanes are narrow service roads or alleyways running behind rows of houses or buildings, typically used for garbage collection, deliveries, or access to rear garages.

Common in older British and Canadian neighborhoods, they're called back alleys in much American usage: Kids played hockey in the back lanes.

The term evokes working-class neighborhoods and unglamorous urban spaces.
