anthrax attacks
Deadly mail terrorism
The anthrax attacks, also called Amerithrax, were a series of mailings in September and October 2001 in which letters containing anthrax spores were sent to news media offices and two U.S. senators, killing five people and infecting seventeen others.
Coming shortly after September 11, the attacks heightened fears of bioterrorism.
The FBI eventually attributed the attacks to a government scientist who committed suicide before charges were filed.
