ameliorate
Lessen the severity
Ameliorate means to make something bad or unsatisfactory better: The new policies ameliorated working conditions.
It's a formal word, more common in writing than speech, and typically applies to conditions, situations, or problems rather than objects.
Unlike improve, ameliorate carries a sense of relieving suffering or hardship: Nothing could ameliorate her grief.
