ability test

An ability test measures what someone can do—their capacity to perform specific mental or physical tasks.

These assessments evaluate skills like reasoning, spatial awareness, verbal comprehension, or mechanical aptitude: The job application required an ability test in basic math.

Ability tests differ from achievement tests, which measure what someone has already learned, by focusing on potential or current capability rather than accumulated knowledge.
