The Living Daylights
The living daylights is an intensifier used almost exclusively with verbs of violence or fear: scare the living daylights out of someone, beat the living daylights out of someone.
The phrase suggests something vital and inner—consciousness, wits, or spirit—being forcibly expelled.
Daylights alone once meant eyes, then extended to innards generally; living intensifies the effect.
