New York State of Mind
Big Apple attitude
A New York state of mind is the confident, fast-paced, no-nonsense attitude associated with New York City—ambitious, direct, and unfazed by chaos.
The phrase was popularized by Billy Joel's 1976 song celebrating the city's pull on those who belong there.
It suggests both toughness and a certain romantic attachment to urban grit: I don't need a vacation, I just need to get back into a New York state of mind.
