Megan's Law
Sex offender notification
Megan's Law refers to American legislation requiring law enforcement to make information about registered sex offenders available to the public.
Named after Megan Kanka, a seven-year-old murdered in 1994 by a neighbor with prior sex offense convictions, the law exists in various forms across all fifty states.
It typically mandates community notification when offenders move into an area: We checked Megan's Law registry before buying the house.
