Emiliania huxleyi

Emiliania huxleyi is a species of single-celled marine algae, one of the most abundant phytoplankton in the ocean.

These microscopic organisms are coccolithophores—they build intricate calcium carbonate plates around themselves that accumulate on the seafloor when they die.

Massive blooms can turn ocean surfaces milky turquoise, visible from space.
