East African Rift
Africa's splitting seam
The East African Rift is a massive geological fracture system stretching thousands of kilometers through eastern Africa, from Ethiopia south through Kenya, Tanzania, and into Mozambique.
This active continental rift zone, where tectonic plates are slowly pulling apart, has created dramatic landscapes including deep valleys, towering volcanoes, and chains of lakes such as Tanganyika and Malawi.
The region is significant in human evolution studies, as many important hominin fossils have been discovered in its exposed sediments.
