Dutch licorice

Salmiak confection treat

Dutch licorice is a variety of licorice candy from the Netherlands, typically firmer and more intensely flavored than American versions.

Much of it contains salmiak—ammonium chloride—giving it a salty, almost medicinal taste that can shock the uninitiated.

The Dutch consume more licorice per capita than any other nation, in forms ranging from sweet to powerfully salty: I brought back some Dutch licorice from Amsterdam and my kids hated it.
