Dirty War
Argentine military repression
A dirty war is an armed conflict in which a government uses extralegal tactics against its own citizens—torture, disappearances, death squads, extrajudicial killings.
The term originated with Argentina's brutal campaign against suspected leftists in the 1970s and 80s: Thousands vanished during the Dirty War.
It now applies to similar state terror campaigns elsewhere.
