Blithe Spirit

Cheerful supernatural presence

A blithe spirit is someone carefree, lighthearted, and unconcerned with worldly troubles—the kind of person who moves through life with airy cheerfulness.

The phrase comes from Shelley's poem addressing a skylark: Hail to thee, blithe Spirit!

Noël Coward's 1941 play of the same name features an actual ghost, playing on the word spirit.

The expression now describes anyone with an infectious, unburdened joy: She floated through the party like a blithe spirit, charming everyone she met.
