Ancient Olympic Games
Classical Greek athletics
The Ancient Olympic Games were athletic competitions held every four years at Olympia in ancient Greece, beginning in 776 BCE and continuing for over a millennium.
The games honored Zeus and featured events like footraces, wrestling, boxing, and chariot racing.
Only free Greek men could compete.
The modern Olympic Games, revived in 1896, take their name and four-year cycle from this tradition.
